As of February 28, 2017, approximately 6000-8000 persons are affected due to the flooding and no emergency has been declared yet. An estimated 14,000 people are considered at risk and vulnerable to the flooding in Lawa – Tapanahony. Flooding downstream of the banks of the Lawa River and Tapanahony river have increased the contamination and pollution of the Marowijne river upstream. The flood waters have affected the water supply and other public infrastructure including schools and roads. Food packages have been distributed by the Suriname National Coordination Center NCCR. A PAHO water and sanitation advisor (WASH) has arrived in Paramaribo and will be participating in a damage assessment with health authorities and a PAHO technical team. PAHO will be providing water treatment tablets and will continue to liaise with support in the area of health emergency response, health needs assessment and recovery. (OS: PAHO/SURINAME)
